Squid Game Filming Locations: Real Locations from the Most Popular TV Series
Only the lazy is not discussing the Squid Game series now – so much it blew up all the ratings and the whole world watches it. But filming locations of this exciting series, where millions of fans dream of getting, are in no less demand today.
This project has become one of the most popular in the history of the streaming platform Netflix, and is the first South Korean series to achieve such success. In the series, the creators touch upon problems that are close to many people around the world – poverty, loans, deadlock, family problems, and many other situations that have intensified due to the coronavirus. It is possibly the key reason for the mega popularity of the project. A lot of films where people are fighting for their lives, including participating in games, are gaining frenzied popularity all over the world. Remember the same series of films “The Hunger Games” with Jennifer Lawrence, where the authors wrapped our reality in a beautiful wrapper, only slightly exaggerating it. Social inequality, the struggle for survival, the thirst for competition have always interested the viewer, who, deep in their heart, understand that they still encounter all these concepts in real life. The director paid special attention to the choice of filming locations to convey the whole atmosphere of difficult life situations of the characters. Even though almost the entire film the action takes place in a huge indoor room furnished with various decorations, many scenes were filmed on residential streets. Many people have a question – where was this series filmed? And there are several places at once.
The main set of scenery was specially built for the series in Daejeon, Korea’s fifth-largest city and the center of television production. But what about outdoor scenes? The shooting took place in the city of Seoul, which according to the scenario is the hometown of most of the participants in the death game.
Filming Locations You Can Visit Today
Gi-hun proudly declares that he is from Ssangmun-dong, a small area on the northern outskirts of Seoul. You could see him more than once at the local Baegun market when he visited the fish stall where the mother of his old friend Cho Sang-woo works. By the way, you can find this market on Samyang-ro 154-gil. You can even find that counter or just walk around the market and buy lots of delicious local food.
Remember that little shop-cafe where Sang-woo and Ali eat noodles after returning to Seoul again in Episode 2? This place exists, and it looks the same as it was shown in the series. Head here for those noodles after a hard day.
CU Ssangmun Uicheon Branch
Another popular Squid Game filming location in Seoul is the little shop where Gi-hun drank soju on rainy days before the old man numbered 001 joined him. By the way, before this project came out, this place was rather inconspicuous and was not in great demand. But after Squid Game, with its overwhelming success, crowds of fans come here to sit by the store to drink soju and eat noodles.
Dangjin Dobido Port
The very port that you saw at the end of the second episode, where future participants in vans were loaded onto the ferry, is nothing more than the Dangjin Dobido Port. Be sure to visit this place, because there is something to see. You can find it at 558 Nanjido-ri, Seokmun-myeon, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea.
One of the main scenes in the city takes place in the last episode, when Gi-hun receives a map with a mysterious address. Following the instructions, he finds himself in a huge shining building, where he meets player 001 and makes an unexpected revelatory discovery. Filming took place at the IFC Mall, which is located in the financial district of Yeouido-dong, south of the river. This skyscraper can be visited in real life, it looks amazing, especially when the lights are on!
And near the IFC Mall, you can find the very place where the homeless man lay, on whose life Oh Il-nam and Gi-hun were betting.
Remember that huge bridge from which Deok-su jumped to escape from the bandits chasing him for his debts? This is nothing more than the Pyeongtaek–Siheung Expressway. The spectacle is certainly exciting, but do not try to repeat it in your life!
Minji Hair Salon
Remember that barbershop where Gi-hun dyed his hair bright red in the last episode? This is Minji Hair Salon, which, by the way, you can also head to if you want to change your haircut.
One of the most significant events that led the protagonist to the survival game happened at a subway station. There, he played with mysterious strangers in an old South Korean game of Ddakji in the first episode. If you want to find the exact subway station, head to Yangjae Citizen’s Forest Station in the upmarket Gangnam area.
Incheon International Airport
Admit it, this ending did not allow you to stop watching for a minute. You are not alone in this experience, as are millions of other viewers. In the last episode, we see Gi-hun at the airport, with the very calling card that led him to this bloody game. According to the script, the character is located in Incheon International Airport, which is the largest airport in South Korea and at the same time the main gateway for all tourists who arrive in the country.
If you need help getting around the city upon arrival at the South Korean airport, you can order a transfer that would comfortably take you to the center of Seoul.
And if you need to while away a little time at the airport, then feel free to head to the luxurious waiting rooms, of which there are as many as 8! Choose whichever one is closest to your aircraft landing gate.
Squid Island Is Found
After the debut episode of the first game is released, it becomes clear that all survival games in Squid Game take place on the island. Fans of the crazy series tried to find out what this mysterious place is and where to find it. Many thought the Squid Game was set on the island of Jeju. But later it becomes apparent that this is Seongapdo Island, Incheon. This island, due to its unusual geographical features (yes, its shape looks like a crescent moon) has always been a kind of attraction. But after the release of the project, the number of people wishing to visit this island has grown significantly. The island is semi-inhabited because only four people live in the neighborhood. But it is quite difficult to visit it since regular ships do not come here. However, there are other islands nearby those welcome tourists. You can easily find them on the map of the Korean islands, but one of the most interesting is Wolmido Island, which is located a kilometer from the coast of Incheon. Arriving at Wolmido, you can not only enjoy the view of the West Sea but also relax in a café, eat delicious fresh fish and seafood in nearby restaurants. Amateur concerts are constantly held here, and street artists paint portraits of tourists. Speaking of Wolmido Island, one cannot fail to mention a large theme park with many attractions. And the best part is that it is not at all necessary to take a ferry here because the island is connected to the mainland through a highway.
This drama series leaves few people indifferent. Interestingly, the creators did not make loud advertising for the project. So, it became popular thanks to the audience. TikTok’s users started filming a video based on the series, and so the whole world learned about it. Moreover, the hashtag of the #squidgame series has collected over 56 billion views. And if you want to truly immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the series, then feel free to go to the filming locations we described above. It is not difficult to find them, and you can visit most of them even for free. So if you are lucky enough to be in South Korea, be sure to visit these places to feel like a character in this incredible series.
