8 Fake attractions made for tourists

Jul.14.2020

Sightseeing is a paramount part of the trip. It is worth remembering that some of the places were created only for commercial gain, wishing to immerse you in the culture and history of famous places. Some of them have never existed, while others deliberately distort historical facts to attract tourists. We have collected the most favored sights where the trick for the traveler is waiting:

Restaurant Piz Gloria, Switzerland

Restaurant Piz Gloria

James Bond fans will surely remember the stunning views from Piz Gloria, shown in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. But the catch is that at the time of filming, the place wasn’t even finished. The filmmakers had to finance the completion of construction work in exchange for permission to shoot there.

221B Baker Street, United Kingdom

Bakerstreet 221b

A famous address is familiar to everyone since childhood. Sherlock Holmes House is one of the most popular places in London. Crowds of tourists come to 221B Baker Street every year as the Sherlock Holmes Museum is located here. The author described what street did sherlock holmes live on in detail.

When the author wrote stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, such a house and address didn’t exist. The numbering ended somewhere on the hundred or so. Later the street was lengthened, new houses and numbering appeared. Originally there was a construction company here.

Now the Sherlock Holmes Museum is located at this address, but there’s a catch: its real number is 239 rather than 221b, which, according to the official city certificate, isn’t fixed anywhere. The interior of the museum very precisely corresponds to the descriptions from the book: it’s an ideal example of an arrangement of the house at the end of XIX-XX centuries.

Bran Castle, Romania

Castle Bran in Romania

This castle is considered the home of perhaps the most famous vampire on the planet, Count Dracula. The Romanian celebrity attracts tourists from all over the world to the castle near the town Brașov. There are excursions related to the famous vampire, who want to spend the night in the fortress of the legendary Count.

However, no Dracula lived there, of course. Count Vlad Tepes, aka Dracula, has nothing in common with Bran Castle. He was born in the city Sighișoara, and the writer Bram Stoker brought that name the glory of a bloodsucker.

The only thing that connects this castle to Bram Stoker’s character is the Prince of Wallachia, Vlad Tepes, a prototype of Count Dracula, who spent the night there during his hikes and hunted in the surrounding area.

Romeo and Juliet balcony, Italy

Romeo and Julliet balcony

Fans of Shakespeare’s work and just tourists come every day to see Juliet’s balcony in Verona and call it the “Temple of Love.” The house has no ties to Juliete in any way. First of all, it’s a fictional character, and the Verona authorities just went for a commercial move. Secondly, Juliet’s famous balcony in this house has nothing to do with even the play itself, where lovers talked on the terrace.

And this is a double fake. First of all, Romeo and Juliet never existed – it’s a fictional story. If Shakespeare had prototypes, we don’t know about them. Second, in the play, lovers chatted on the terrace, and the balcony appeared in the movies. So there’s no “that” place, it’s just a guide’s trick from Verona.

Where is Shangri La?

Shangri La

Another book landmark that never existed in the real world. Shangri-La is a fictional country, where the action of James Hilton’s novel “Lost Horizon” takes place. Of course, the real Shangri-La and even its prototype did not exist, but in 2001, Zhongdian County was renamed Shangri-La and began to attract tourists there.

Whether it is Shangri-La or not, travelers have something to see there: from emerald forests and snow-capped mountains to numerous Tibetan temples.

Checkpoint Charlie, Germany

Checkpoint Charlies in Germany

Checkpoint “Charlie” on Friedrichstrasse – the most famous checkpoint in Berlin. It was created after the division of the city by the Berlin Wall for the transition from West to East Berlin and has been mentioned more than once infamous movies (“The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” “Bridge of Spies” etc.) However, the current building is just a restored fake: the original checkpoint charlie sign was demolished in 1990.

Sleepy Hollow history, USA

Sleepy Hollow

A small town in the state of New York is popular among fans of the book by Washington Irvine and the film of the same name. The action of the famous and later filmed Washington Irving story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” unfolds here. Tim Burton’s film “Sleepy Hollow” became cult.

However, in reality, there is no Sleepy Hollow. If you are curious where is sleepy hollow location, the settlement of the same name in the state of New York, located on the east bank of the Hudson, until 1996 was called North Tarrytown. But when the city-forming factory closed, the mayor renamed the city to Sleepy Hollow, and this ensured popularity among tourists.

While shooting the film took place in England, and the legend of the Headless Horseman was not in this town. Although the grave belonging to the Headless Horseman is still in the cemetery.

Bali gates of heaven

Bali gates of heaven

One of the oldest temples on the island. No matter what they call it: “The Road to Paradise”, “The Gate to Heaven” and the beauty around it is truly heavenly. The pictures there are stunning. Recently there have been a lot of photos from the temple against the background of traditional Balinese gates and a smooth lake in it.

And the lake is just a heavens gate fake with a mirror. By the way, to get a photo with the “lake” you have to stand in line and pay.

Here are just a few famous places that are fake. And even knowing this, tourists continue to visit them anyway. Even though this is only a commercial ruse, people come here for emotions and atmosphere.
